Dear Friends,

Recently we received a donation, I responded with a thank you and then received the below letter in response. With permission granted, I am sharing this special story of a wild child's heart, action and desire to make a difference in this world. This purity of love, being, and truth is absolutely beautiful, and is a shining example of the love we are and the significance of a child’s truth - which is our future.

~ You're most welcome. My daughter, for all that she can't read written words, is a reader of the world and has a way of moving things when she's stirred and shaken. She's come home covered in blood with injured fawns and animals for healing, buries possum and squirrels and birds found in the woods with ceremony, and has been dreaming horses for many years now. She stumbled on a video about wild horses on Pinterest quite accidentally and was in tears from what she saw, with a lot to say about how it made her heart feel.

First she wanted to rescue them by bringing them all here to our 4 acre homestead! Eventually we talked toward helping those who have more land already, supporting their efforts. So after digging around for sanctuaries and watching the videos they had up, me reading to her what they had to say, she selected yours. She liked how you showed, she liked the music, she liked that it was called Wild Love, she wanted to know when could we drive out there and visit, how many days would it take from Virginia, could she ride the horses, and so on! 

She lassoed her eleven year old sister into selling the earrings she makes (this daughter's passion is embroidering mandalas and jewelry making, they're so different in their interests yet both tender hearted!) and giving half the money toward Wild Love Preserve. I have them up on my blog (apocketofdreams.wordpress.com/portfolio/jewels/) with this quote from your website:

Dear Friends,

We have nice news to share with you. Because of Wild Love Preserve's due-diligence, collaborative, and pro-active efforts since 2010 with the Challis-Idaho BLM, there has not been a helicopter roundup of the Challis Herd since October 2012. Prior to Wild Love Preserve, the Challis BLM's intent was to conduct federally funded helicopter roundups and removals every other year. Presently, we are pleased to share yet another positive step forward. Wild Love Preserve and the Challis-Idaho BLM will work together on the current Environmental Assessment of the Challis Herd Management Area as a collective whole, and together develop a 10-year pro-active management plan for the Challis Herd in conjunction with, and relation to, this indigenous ecosystem on our multi-use public lands as an interconnected whole. This collaborative work sets yet another new precedent which serves to benefit our work on all six herd management areas in Idaho, as well as other wild horse regions in the west. 

What does this mean? Wild loves, wild and free, courtesy kindness, mutual respect, and fluid communications between stakeholders.

Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam + Wild Love

Back to Seattle, 1980. Stone Gossard and Andrea Maki first met in the halls of Northwest School at 14 years old, and have been trusted partners in crime since. Art and music are at their cores, accompanied by an awareness to act on behalf our greater whole. While Stone's path is his music and giving back, to include the Vitalogy Foundation, Andrea's lifetime career as a contemporary visual artist includes founding her non-profit Wild Love Preserve in 2010, and Stone was the first to step up and support the project. Stone and the Vitalogy Foundation have been instrumental in successes of Wild Love Preserve’s work with Idaho's Challis wild horses and the preservation of our iconic wild mustangs and wild places. Wild Love's innovative model has demonstrated via boots-on-the-ground implementation, how coexistence, humane treatment, sustainable management, protecting wild horses and indigenous habitats, and saving tax dollars, can work together to benefit stakeholders and our collective whole. Idaho BLM Requests Public Feedback

Here is a link to the Idaho BLM’s National Public Hearing requesting feedback on use of helicopters and motorized vehicles with the Challis wild horses. Comments can be made online or mailed to the Challis Field Office, click here for the details featured on KPVI Idaho news: http://bit.ly/2rckpZz. Due to government shutdown, the deadline for comments is now February 6, 2018.

Thank you in advance for sharing comments in support of Wild Love Preserve’s collaborative work on the Challis HMA and our population management program implementing Native PZP-1YR, which commenced following the 2012 Challis BLM Helicopter Roundup, as a humane and responsible solution to wild horse management on public lands, versus helicopter roundups and removals at taxpayer expense. Wild Love Preserve's wild horse conservation programs, on and off the range, have saved taxpayers over $7.5 million dollars since 2013. 

This public hearing is, in part, a result of the lawsuit filed by Friends of Animals, an east coast nonprofit having no knowledge of the Challis wild horses, which halted a 2018 bait-trap gather with hay and water, that was scheduled in addition to our fifth year on the range remotely darting wild Challis mares with Native PZP-1YR. In 2012 Wild Love Preserve received grants from the ASPCA and the Vitalogy Foundation for five WLP volunteers to train at the Science and Conservation Center and receive EPA required certification to remotely deliver Native PZP-1YR in the field. In 2016, WLP founder, Andrea Maki, orchestrated and helped in teaching The Science and Conservation Center’s PZP training course for Idaho BLM employees from Idaho’s six Herd Management Areas, along with WLP partners at the Youth Employment Program of Idaho.

Talking Points for the BLM:

1) NO to helicopters and motorized vehicles at this pivotal juncture because we have a humane and all-inclusive wild horse conservation program in motion that needs to be given adequate time, attention, and funding by the BLM.

2) Allocate those resources required for helicopters, to instead fully fund and implement Wild Love Preserve's 5-year cooperative agreement with the BLM, which engages stakeholders, youth programs, and benefits the community.

3) Wild Love Preserve has demonstrated, via our programs and boots-on-the-ground implementation, that coexistence, humane treatment and sustainable management, protecting wild lives and indigenous habitats, and saving tax dollars, all work together within our multi-faceted model. WLP programs have saved American taxpayers over $7.5 million dollars since 2013. 

4) Wild Love Preserve's inclusive conservation efforts offer a viable option to government helicopter roundups and removals, integrating total range health, collective harmony, balanced co-existence with indigenous wildlife, and livestock where applicable. The Native PZP-1YR fertility vaccine, which has proven safe and effective for over 25 years, is a key component of our multi-faceted conservation program. Educating stakeholders and the public to alternative options in collectively managing wild horse populations on native turf, by way of demonstration and implementation, serves to benefit other wild horse regions in western states, stakeholders, surrounding communities, and taxpayers.

5) Implement bait trap gather with hay, water or mineral blocks, if necessary, in conjunction with PZP fertility program, versus helicopter roundup and removal.

6) Thorough census count of Challis Herd, from ground and air, is needed prior to any removals.

7) Take into account retired grazing allotments that impact the Challis HMA. Herd Creek was retired at end of 2017.

Not A Fan Or Apologist

Numerous conversations have followed the Bureau of Land Management's National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting from October 2017 in Grand Junction, Colorado. This nine-seat volunteer advisory board is to represent all stakeholders and provides their recommendations in regards to the BLM's methods of management of America's wild horses under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.  

Recently the conversation was brought to me again, and again I was asked why the Advisory Board was apparently quick to dismiss discussion of Wild Love Preserve's model in addressing all facets of regional wild horse population on home turf. I cannot speak for board members, nor was I able to be in attendance for the October meeting, however, I thought to share my March 2017 response to the Advisory Board, when I was questioned as being an apologist, or fan, of one stakeholder over another.

"I’m not a fan or an apologist of anyone, that is antithetical to the mission of Wild Love Preserve, our all-inclusive approach to nurturing indigenous ecosystems as a balanced whole, and responsibly managing regional wild horse populations on native turf with community engagement and benefit. I don’t find the blame game to be an effective path to opening lines of communication between differing stakeholders. My interest is in engaging in discussions that lead to solutions through listening and mutual respect. This is an accountability project and a humanity project. Wild Love Preserve works with the Bureau of Land Management, cattle ranchers, environmentalists, wildlife biologists, wild horse advocates, youth employment groups and regional communities, offering a mutually viable solution to helicopter roundups and removals. My role over the years, has, in many ways, been that of a moderator. Since 2010, Wild Love Preserve has been fully engaged in collaborative population management, accountability and pro-active programs that involve all stakeholders and address the health and balance of the range and this unique indigenous ecosystem as an interconnected and balanced whole. While differing opinions are a given, mutual respect in negotiations and dealings are integral in establishing common ground. We do not implement tools of litigation, instead, we work face-to-face with all stakeholders, finding compromise between differing perspectives through fluid communications in real-time."  -Andrea Maki, March 2017

Wild Love Preserve was founded in 2010 by contemporary visual artist, Andrea Maki. Most said it would be impossible to bring stakeholders together. Some went as far as to try and shut her down. However, she is built of tenacity, and is insistent on truth and integrity, and wouldn't allow others to derail her efforts to establish a new collaborative platform in the name of saving the Challis wild horses on their home turf, and wild horses in the West.
